IPPNY Supports NYS Move to Green Economy

Albany, NY – Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today outlined his energy and environmental priorities to develop New York State’s green economy as part of his State of the State address. The Governor’s remarks included a strong affirmation of private sector participation and competition to help evolve New York’s energy system and economy.

Among the priorities highlighted were continuing to look to the private sector to build more large-scale renewable projects, a competitive process to increase transmission capacity, increasing New York’s renewable energy manufacturing industry, and creating a green energy workforce training program.

IPPNY President and CEO Gavin J. Donohue said, “It was welcome news to see such a focus on private sector investment in New York energy infrastructure to help drive the State’s economic recovery. It is encouraging to hear a commitment from the Governor that permitting and construction of renewable energy facilities will be expedited so we can move toward achieving our shared climate goals. This is about New York jobs, New York taxes, and helping New York communities. Expanding our renewable energy portfolio and ensuring the delivery of that power across the state will allow for guaranteed emissions reductions and increased reliability, while creating in-state jobs – something we should all be happy about.”

The Governor also announced that 24 large-scale renewable projects, as well as two new offshore wind farms, have received awards through the State. While the names of the new project awards are not yet available, IPPNY Members already represent the majority of the 4,315 MW of capacity in the more than 60 awards under previous land-based renewable solicitations.
