Albany, N.Y., 11/14/13 - The Independent Power Producers of New York, Inc. (IPPNY) has told the state's Public Service Commission (PSC) that New York should not be in the business of using New York ratepayer funds to subsidize Canadian government-owned power resources - an act that would put at risk the environmental and economic benefits provided by existing and new renewable resources here in New York. In its comments submitted to the PSC this week on the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) 2013 Review documents, IPPNY opposed H.Q. Energy Services U.S. Inc.'s proposal for New York State incentives to subsidize the Canadian Government's hydroelectric plants for the likely importation of this power into New York over the yet-to-be-built Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) merchant transmission line to link Quebec, Canada with New York City.

Gavin J. Donohue, President & CEO of the Independent Power Producers of New York, Inc. (IPPNY), said "IPPNY supports the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors and the ongoing development of a fair and appropriate national program. New York already has seen significant environmental improvements from independent power producers over the last decade. We look forward to working with Governor Cuomo's Administration to ensure that the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative's allowance auction proceeds are invested further to reduce emissions from the power plant sector even more than the significant accomplishments to date through areas such as innovative carbon dioxide abatement methods and renewable and non-carbon dioxide emitting technologies."

Albany, NY 12/28/12 - Throughout the Article VII Transmission line siting proceeding at the Public Service Commission, the Independent Power Producers of New York, Inc. (IPPNY) established that the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project is not needed for system reliability, does not address existing transmission constraints, is uneconomic (meaning its costs will exceed its anticipated benefits) and does not advance several important state policy goals, including creating in-state jobs and promoting in-state renewable resources. Through expert economic analysis, IPPNY clearly demonstrated that the project, if certified, will ultimately prove detrimental to New York's consumers and to the state as a whole.
